Friday, April 24, 2015

Security Cargo Network held its 13th annual international conference recently in Santa Rosa, which is in the heart of the Sonoma wine country in the US state of California.  The awards are given annually to the member companies who have best displayed their professionalism, network support and strong attitude of partnering in the previous 12 months.  They must also attend the conference to be considered for the award.

This year's awards went to: Mr. and Mrs. Rajah receive their award from Dave Lucia

Under the usual conference format, two mornings were given to general business sessions, with the afternoons plus the third day devoted to one-on-one business development meetings between member companies at half-hour intervals.  Day two of the conference commenced, as usual, with the annual shareholders meeting of SecurityPlus Financial Corp, the network's member-owned payment guarantee program.  All member companies are shareholders.  The primary business of the meeting was the annual Treasurer's Report, given by SPFC vice president and treasurer Mr. Barry Bollinger of Bollinger Shipping Agency (Sydney, Australia, shown below).

Mr. Bollinger had resigned as treasurer the day before at the annual board of directors meeting after over six years of service. He cited the need to pass the baton, and the board unanimously elected Mr. V.N. Rajender, managing director of Unitech Shipping Services (Chennai, India).

Other conference business included a rousing discussion session about whether or not the group should adopt a rate sharing platform to bid for cargo.  The discussion was led by Mr. David Cook of Mat Cargo in Barcelona and Madrid, Spain.  In the end, after further discussion in breakout sessions, the idea did not appear to have the support of the majority of members in attendance.

Social activities included the rental of two Sonoma County Wine Trolleys to visit three different vineyards for wine tasting on the day before the actual commencement.  Besides the awards banquet on Wednesday, many members gathered for dinner together at a French bistro in downtown Santa Rosa.
